Description

Oha Soup is a beloved southeastern Nigerian soup made with tender oha (ora) leaves and traditionally cooked with meats and thickened with cocoyam paste. In this meat-free version, the soup retains its richness and complexity without using animal protein. It begins with a base of palm oil and ground crayfish substitute (such as dried mushrooms or umami seasoning), then blended cocoyam is stirred in to thicken the soup. The distinctive aroma of oha leaves, added towards the end, creates a unique flavor that is earthy, slightly bitter, and deeply comforting. Other additions like uziza leaves or ogiri (fermented locust bean) can enhance the complexity. This vegetarian take ensures the same creamy, savory taste as the original, with plant-based depth provided by mushroom broth or vegetarian bouillon. The soup is perfect when served hot with pounded yam, fufu, or semovita. Despite lacking meat, it remains hearty, deeply Nigerian, and incredibly satisfying.
